The Organisation of Galician Mussel Producers, OPMEGA, will focus the conference on proposing perfect and economical recipes for Christmas menus, with mussels as the main ingredient.
Vilagarcía de Arousa, 11 November – The Organisation of Galician Mussel Producers, OPMEGA, has set out to help consumers in Madrid to enjoy top quality menus this Christmas, without having to dig deep into their pockets. OPMEGA is holding a special edition of its Gastronomic Days, in which mussels will be presented as a very versatile shellfish for all kinds of recipes, including those worthy of the festive season. The event will take place on 30 November and 1 and 2 December in the central Barceló Market.
Promoted by the organisation of Galician bateeiros and supported by Mercados de Madrid, the OPMEGA Gastronomic Days have become the perfect initiative to raise awareness of the nutritional and gastronomic benefits of mussels, while also highlighting the importance of the markets as distributors of the best fresh product.
Now, the Galician PO is going one step further in this collaboration and is adding a new event to its campaign. The Christmas special of the OPMEGA Gastronomic Days is a response to the current situation of rising prices in the shopping basket, something which will undoubtedly be felt in the planning of Christmas menus. Faced with this difficulty for consumers, mussels are presented as a very affordable seafood with numerous possibilities in preparations for the festive season.
Those attending the Barceló Market will be able to enjoy free tastings of different mussel recipes, gifts for purchases at the fishmongers and 5 showcookings led by the chef Miguel Mosteiro.
On this occasion, the cooking shows will focus on proposing mussel recipes for Christmas menus. High quality but simple dishes, with nothing to envy to those made with much more expensive seafood.
In each showcooking, 2 different recipes will be presented, which attendees will have the opportunity to taste. As usual, participation in these activities will be completely free of charge, with the only requirement being prior registration at the OPMEGA information stand.
The cooking demonstrations will be held at the stand set up in the Barceló Garden, a multi-purpose space located on floor 0 of the market. On Thursday 30 November and Friday 1 December, the appointments will be at 12:00h and 18:00h. On Saturday 2 December there will only be showcooking in the morning, also at 12:00h.
Those who miss out on the cooking shows will also be able to taste the best mussels. Throughout the day, free mussel tastings will be served at the OPMEGA information stand.
The market’s fishmongers will also join the campaign and, during these 3 days, purchases mussels from OPMEGA will have a prize. For every purchase of 1 kilo of mussels, recipe books, rucksacks, kitchen tongs and other promotional gifts will be given away. In addition, the conference will serve to present to the consumer the new fresh mussel trays developed by OPMEGA. A packaging system with a controlled atmosphere, which allows the shelf life of fresh mussels to be extended. The mussels are presented clean and ready for consumption in microwaveable packaging.
In addition to the gastronomic activities, the Christmas edition of the OPMEGA conference will be another opportunity to visit the exhibition “Mujeres Bateeiras. Mussels through the hands of women”. It is a photographic exhibition that, with images from the 1950s to the present day, vindicates the historical role of women in the traditional process of mussel cultivation. The exhibition panels can also be visited at the Barceló Market.
